President Barack Obama launched a vigorous defense of his economic agenda Wednesday, rejecting critics who call his policies “socialism” and insisting he aims to boost U.S. competitiveness abroad.

Speaking to the Company Roundtable, which groups some with the country’s prime chief executives, Obama known as for support of his administration’s initiatives to overhaul monetary regulation and generate work opportunities.

Obama’s remarks have been set against a backdrop of unease inside the organization community about his economic and finances policies at the same time as his legislative drive for healthcare, power and personal regulatory reform.

“Contrary on the claims of several of my critics, I’m an ardent believer from the free of charge marketplace,” Obama said in ready remarks.

Obama stated his initiatives to enact sweeping legislation to overhaul financial regulations and arranged caps on carbon emissions to fight climate adjust had been not aimed at thwarting enterprises.

“We have arrived at a juncture in our politics where reasonable efforts to update our regulations, or make simple investments in our long term, are as well usually greeted with cries of ‘government takeover’ or maybe ‘socialism’,” Obama claimed.

“Getting this balance proper has fewer to try and do with significant government or little federal than it does smart federal government. It is not about staying anti-business or pro-government; it is about becoming pro-growth and pro-jobs,” he claimed.

The president’s agenda got a increase early on Wednesday from the U.S. Senate, which, in the fairly bipartisan vote, approved a $15 billion package of tax breaks and highway spending that aims to bring straight down the country’s stubbornly higher 9.7 percent unemployment charge.

The bill now goes on the Home of Representatives, which could approve the measure rapidly for Obama to sign into law.

Obama welcomed the Senate vote.

“This can be an critical step forward in placing a lot more Americans back to do the job as soon as doable,” he mentioned. Obama and his fellow Democrats are determined to deliver lower the unemployment fee before congressional elections in November.
